NorthWest Emergency Communications Service
SKYWARN OPERATIONS
NWECS also conducts Skywarn Operations on its communications system,
and many NWECS members have attended the Skywarn Spotter Training, which
is offered by the National Weather Service. Our Skywarn Spotters watch
the skies for Severe Weather, which is relayed to the National Weather
Service via telephone, or via radio.
Severe weather includes, but is not limited to: Heavy rainfall, Flash
floods, Gail winds/gusts, Tropical storms/hurricanes, thunderstorms,
winter storms/blizzards, Funnel clouds/tornadoes, and Water spouts.
NWECS also works in conjunction with Jersey Coastal Emergency Services,
and also the JCES Weather Coordinator who operates from the Harrison
Weather Center (HWC). Located in Harrison, New Jersey, the NWS has certified
the HWC as an official weather center fit to coordinate SkyWarn activities
for JCES.
During Skywarn activation, use of the NWECS communications system may
be restricted to strictly emergency traffic and Skywarn reports, in
accordance with NWECS policies and procedures.
